Alexandre Bain wines: exceptional wines in biodynamics at Pouilly Fumé, in the Loire.
A key figure in the natural wines of the Loire, Domaine Alexandre Bain cultivates around ten hectares of sauvignon blanc in Tracy-sur-Loire, at the heart of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, a few kilometres from Sancerre. Established since 2007 on the lieu-dit Boisfleury, this winemaker tends his vineyard using organic and biodynamic farming, ploughs his most fragile parcels with his Percheron horse Phénomène, and harvests by hand grapes picked at perfect ripeness. His cuvées, fermented with indigenous yeasts only, without chaptalization, fining, filtration, and most often without added sulphites, offer a radically personal interpretation of the Pouilly terroir.
After winning his appeal before the competent courts in 2017, everything returned to order and Alexandre Bain regained his authorization to label his wines under the AOC Pouilly Fumé (and no longer as Vin de France). In order to move beyond the technical framework of the debate: "wine that deserves its appellation or not", we will say that Alexandre Bain produces, with the greatest passion, authentic white Loire wines that reflect their vintage and their terroir. A devotee of biodynamic farming, Alexandre Bain harvests ripe Sauvignons, barrel-aged with very little sulphiting. Neither yeasted, nor chaptalized, nor filtered, his wines claim to be natural and are golden, generous, sometimes more accomplished on the palate than on the nose, and can seem quite far removed from the appellation's standards. By championing the terroir, Alexandre Bain moves away from the varietal markers that the region seems to favour (the famous aromas of boxwood, blackcurrant leaf, or juniper berries). The wines of Domaine Alexandre BAIN are more characterised by acidic notes that sometimes tend towards exotic and spiced fruit aromas (curry), with a full, shimmering ripeness, set by a masterfully measured ageing. The cuvée from Domaine Alexandre Bain "Mademoiselle M" is a 100% Sauvignon cuvée, sourced from Kimmeridgian limestone soils (marl with small oysters, as found in Chablis in Burgundy), a richer, more structuring terroir. This cuvée contains no added sulphites and is aged in large oak barrels for 18 months. Here one discovers a wine with fruity aromas (citrus, white fruits, exotic fruits) and mineral notes. On the palate, the balance is perfect, without offering the exuberance of the nose, but with great finesse, chiselled minerality, breadth and freshness, with a finish marked by bitterness and considerable length. The cuvée from Domaine Alexandre Bain "Pierre Précieuse" was crafted in the most natural way possible, with fermentation triggered on indigenous yeasts and the minimum amount of sulphur possible. The wine surprises with a divine balance between crystalline purity and well-ripened flavours, tension and aromatic complexity. Superb — a must-discover if you do not already know it, as it features on the table of more than 20 Michelin-starred restaurants. It is sometimes said that the AOC Pouilly-Fumé lacks star winemakers to shine on the international stage as the AOC Sancerre does. The wines of Alexandre Bain are of the highest calibre, and it is up to you to discover them, for they are authentic, precious and rare on the market. Simply take the precaution of aerating them well before tasting.
